Raymond: A visionary leader in the making

My name is Raymond. I grew up in Kabiria in the Dagoretti area, coming from a struggling family. Raised by my grandmother, I experienced firsthand the challenges of financial hardship. My early education began at Kayole Hekima Academy, where my aunt and extended family worked tirelessly to support my school fees and basic needs. However, despite their collective efforts, it was still not enough.

Recognizing the importance of education in shaping my future, my grandmother took it upon herself to seek help. She discovered the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) and sought assistance. After a rigorous process, I was fortunate enough to be approved for sponsorship. This marked a turning point in my life. I was sponsored by Sharon, who generously covered all my educational expenses. I had never felt so much joy and relief. For the first time, I truly believed that I had a chance to succeed.

After joining NRCF, I moved to Jagiet Academy, one of the program’s focus schools, as a class 6 student. This institution was well-regarded, and I was determined to make the most of the opportunity. That same year, I was appointed as the class prefect. My class teacher saw a spark of leadership in me, a recognition that fueled my confidence and growth as a young leader despite coming from a humble background. The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 disrupted education worldwide, but for me, it became an opportunity to advance academically. With schools closed, my family hired a private tutor—a high school graduate—to help me improve my studies. During this period, I particularly strengthened my skills in Mathematics. In 2021, I sat for my end of primary education examinations and achieved an impressive score, earning me a place at The Machakos School for my secondary education.

High school was a transformative period for me. The organization continued to provide invaluable support, offering programs in life skills, computer training, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and mental health awareness. Their encouragement made my high school journey smoother and equipped me with essential knowledge to navigate life’s challenges. I completed my KCSE in 2024, attaining a grade of B.

Since finishing high school, I have been fortunate to participate in further training programs facilitated by the organization. Looking ahead, I aspire to pursue a degree in Computer Science at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). This institution is renowned for its cutting-edge facilities and high-quality education in technology. My passion for technology drives me to become an innovator in the field, transforming ideas into reality and contributing meaningfully to the world of tech.

I extend my deepest gratitude to my sponsor and the NRCF for their unwavering support and belief in me. Their generosity has shaped my journey, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

As Albert Einstein once said, “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” I strive to live by these words, aiming not only for personal success but also to contribute positively to society and inspire others who, like me, come from humble beginnings.

Faith, our top KCSE 2024 Performer

Meet Faith, the top KCSE 2024 performer at the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation.  From humble beginnings, she has defied the odds to achieve academic excellence, scoring an A- in her KCSE examinations. Growing up with her two parents and three sisters, Faith’s family faced financial struggles, particularly in paying school fees. “Many are the times I was sent home due to unpaid fees,” she recalls. Despite these challenges, she was always determined to succeed.

Faith joined the NRCF program in 2016 and joined Nelson Mandela Primary School, where she studied until 2020. In 2021, she secured a place at Precious Blood Riruta Secondary School, a prestigious institution known for academic excellence. At Precious Blood, Faith not only excelled in her studies but also took on leadership roles—serving as the Assistant Head of Kiswahili in her class and actively participating in hockey.

With her outstanding performance in KCSE 2024, Faith aspires to pursue a career in the medical field at Kenyatta University. Her dream is to become a medical doctor, a career driven by her passion for helping others and making a difference in the healthcare sector.

Faith attributes much of her success to the immense support she received along the way. She expresses her heartfelt gratitude to Mary, her sponsor, saying, “I would really like to thank her for her continuous support in my studies.” She also acknowledges the NRCF Foundation for its unwavering support in her education and family life, providing food aid and ensuring she and her sisters had the opportunity to study.

As she prepares for the next chapter of her academic journey, we celebrate Faith’s achievements and wish her all the best. The future is bright for Faith, and we can’t wait to see the impact she will make in the world.

Laphenus: Aspiring Psychiatrist with a passion for Acting and Sports.

My name is Laphenus, a 14-year-old Grade 8 student at P.C.E.A Kimuri Comprehensive School. I am a passionate and driven individual who loves acting, storytelling, and playing sports such as basketball, netball, and handball. My favorite subjects are Kiswahili and Social Studies, which allow me to explore my creativity and learn about the world

I am proud of my teamwork skills, which I’ve developed through my active participation in school activities. Acting is one of my favorite things—it allows me to express myself, connect with others, and tell stories that inspire and entertain. I’ve been fortunate to be part of a team at the Kenya National Theatre, which has given me valuable experience and helped me grow as an actor.

My dream is to become a psychiatrist because I am fascinated by the human mind and deeply care about helping people overcome emotional and mental challenges. Alongside my career aspirations, I plan to continue acting as a way to share powerful messages and stories.

One of my dreams is to visit Paris and India. Paris inspires me with its beauty, art, and culture, while India fascinates me with its vibrant traditions and storytelling. My favorite actor, Sarah Hassan, motivates me to work hard and believe in my talent.

The Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) has been instrumental in shaping my journey. Before joining NRCF in 2020, life was tough for my family, and education felt like an unattainable dream. NRCF stepped in, providing me with school fees, meals, medical care, and supplies, enabling me to attend one of NRCF’s focused schools, Jagiet Academy, where I thrived. At NRCF, I’ve also been active in Saturday program activities such as taekwondo, drama, and dance, which have helped me develop discipline, creativity, and confidence.

Today, NRCF continues to provide mentorship and resources that allow me to pursue my passions and excel in my studies. It has not only given me access to education but also the confidence to believe in myself and my future. With the support of NRCF, I am determined to make my dreams a reality and contribute positively to my community. I am living proof that education and encouragement can transform lives, and I am excited about the future that lies ahead.

Francis’s Entrepreneurial Journey with Epicears Rabbitry

Francis is a professional zoologist, rabbit farmer, and web developer with an inspiring story of resilience and entrepreneurship. His journey with the NRCF program began in 2010 when he joined the program, as his mother had struggled to keep him in school. Through NRCF’s assistance, he completed his primary and secondary education and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Today, Francis is a thriving entrepreneur, running his own business, Epicears Rabbitry, which he established in November 2023. His journey into entrepreneurship was strengthened by his time in the Techmates program, where he acquired valuable web development skills. These skills have enabled him to create a website for Epicears Rabbitry, enhancing its reach and marketing effectiveness.

His involvement in NRCF’s Small Business Training program further boosted his business. The training program provided Francis with funds to expand by purchasing new rabbits, helping him meet growing customer demand. Epicears Rabbitry also caters to events by selling rabbit meat-based dishes, a popular option due to the meat’s lean and healthy protein content. The demand has grown so significantly that Francis now collaborates with other farmers to maintain a steady supply.

Francis is grateful to the NRCF program for both his educational foundation and the support he received to fuel his entrepreneurial journey. He is optimistic about the continued growth of Epicears Rabbitry and is committed to providing a nutritious food option to the community while scaling his business.

Transformational Stories of two Early Childhood Teachers

Plister

Plister joined the organization on 8th December 2007. Before that, her parents could not pay her school fees, which made it difficult for her to continue her education. However, joining the organization allowed her to attend school and receive the support she needed to succeed.

In January 2008, she was enrolled in City Prime School and later transferred to Nelson Mandela Primary School where she completed her primary studies. She proceeded to St’ Tito Girls High School for secondary education. After completing her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, Plister joined the National Youth Service where youths are trained in Paramilitary skills and professional courses that match their qualifications.

As a child, she had always felt a deep connection to children being drawn to their curiosity and boundless energy. This passion led her to pursue a Diploma in Early Childhood Development at the International Training Teachers College Kitengela.

After graduating with her diploma, Plister secured a job at Lakewood Emerald School Kitengela. Every day, she wakes up with a sense of purpose and excitement, knowing that she has the privilege of shaping the lives of young children.  Her interaction with her students reminds her of her journey and the transformational impact that education can have.

Thanks to the foundation, Plister, a once shy and introverted girl is now a confident outgoing young woman. “It is through the foundation’s support that I was able to achieve my dreams. Working as a teacher has helped me come out of my shell”, she smilingly said. Today,  Plister has been able to transform her life and is now self-sufficient, supporting herself and her family.

Brenda

The program welcomed Brenda on June 26, 2008. She attended City Prime School for her elementary schooling before transferring to Nelson Mandela School. St. Tito Girls High School was where she went to complete her secondary school. Later, at International Teachers Training College in Kitengela, Brenda worked towards a diploma in Early Childhood Development Studies. After finishing her studies, she was fortunate enough to land a job at Kitengela’s Lakewood Emerald School.

Brenda gets her energy and pleasure from interacting with people, thus she excels in social situations. She expresses herself with confidence and is conversational and active. Her profession and social life complement one another since she has no trouble relating to kids in a classroom setting. She inspires and motivates pupils because of her interactive teaching style, which increases their enjoyment of learning. She has become more organized, self-motivated, and optimistic about her work over time.

Brenda is incredibly appreciative of Marti Morfitt, her sponsor via the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation. She acknowledges that she could not have gone to school without the program’s support. Her life has been totally transformed by the support she received; she is now able to support her child, herself, and even her mother and brothers. She is particularly appreciative of the life-changing programs that served as the cornerstone of her development, including summer camps, computer lessons, and medical assistance. She is incredibly grateful and hopes that the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation will continue to help other underprivileged children the way it helped her.
