Empowering Dreams: Becks’ Journey

My name is Becks, and I am a high school student at Ole-tipis Girls High School in Kenya. I live with my mother and two siblings, and I joined Ngong Road Children’s Foundation in 2015. Through this program, I was able to attend Jagiet Academy for my primary education, and I am now in Form Two at Ole-tipis.

I love school, and my favorite subjects are English and History. I also enjoy reading novels and cooking. I have dreams of becoming a lawyer, an author, and a chef. I chose law because I want to be a beacon of hope for the oppressed. I believe that everyone deserves to have access to justice, and I want to use my skills to help those who are unable to defend themselves.

I also love to write, and I dream of becoming an author one day. I hope to share my stories with the world and inspire others. Finally, I love to cook. I find it to be a very creative and rewarding experience. I hope to one day open my own restaurant and share my passion for food with others.

Last week, I was hosted for a career development week inside the Elimu Hub library. This was a safe space for reading and writing, and I learned so much about the power of my inner voice. I enjoyed the training immensely, and I can’t wait to share what I learned with my friends at school. I am so grateful to Ngong Road Children’s Foundation and my sponsor for believing in me and giving me the gift of education. I am also grateful to my mother for walking with me through this journey of life.

I know that I have a bright future ahead of me, and I am excited to see what it holds. I am determined to achieve my dreams and make a difference in the world. If you would like to be part of my journey and help brighten a promising future, please consider sponsoring a child through Ngong Road Children’s Foundation.

Empowering Students through Sexual Reproductive Health Education

Sexual reproductive health is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, encompassing physical, emotional, and social dimensions of human life. It involves the ability to make informed choices regarding one’s sexual activity, access to healthcare and contraception, and the promotion of healthy relationships, ensuring individuals can lead fulfilling and satisfying lives. Understanding and advocating for sexual reproductive health is essential for achieving gender equality, personal autonomy, and overall societal progress.

 youth empowerment

At Ngong Road Children’s Foundation, we recently organized a three-day training program for sexual reproductive health aimed at our high school students in forms one, two, and three. Over 70 students attended this program with the primary goal of addressing the rising trends of pregnancies and STI infections, while also providing knowledge on how to navigate crucial life situations.

The training sessions were held within the ELIMU HUB library, creating a safe and conducive environment for open discussions. The students were receptive and enthusiastic about the program. One form three student shared, “SRH has been impactful, and I have learned the importance of abstaining from sexual intercourse. I will surely spread the word to my friends.”

The program was conducted by our Youth Peer Providers (YPP), who covered essential topics such as adolescence, contraceptives, relationships, STIs, and safe sex. Additionally, the students engaged in various icebreakers and demonstrations, making the learning experience interactive and enjoyable.

In today’s rapidly changing world, knowledge and awareness of sexual reproductive health are indispensable. Programs like this not only equip our youth with essential life skills but also contribute to building a healthier and more informed society. We take a significant step towards a more equitable and progressive future by empowering the younger generation to make informed choices and promoting healthy relationships.

A Brighter Future with Ngong Road Children’s Foundation

My name is Britney, and I had the privilege of joining Ngong Road Children’s Foundation this year. Currently, I’m a student at Jagiet Primary which is one of the program’s focus schools, and I’m in the fifth grade. I find joy in the little things in life, like singing, drawing, and dancing, which fill my days with vibrancy and passion and this is why I joined the dance club. This year has been my best year yet, all thanks to the NRCF program. I am getting quality education, making new friends, and learning new things both academically and socially.

education

I aspire to become a teacher and share my love and compassion with others. Being a friendly person at heart, I believe teaching is the perfect path for me. In addition to teaching, I yearn to pursue professional dancing as a means of self-expression and physical exercise. But my dreams don’t stop there; I aim to build a beautiful home for my parents and offer them support for their financial needs. Through my hard work, I hope to make these dreams a reality and create a brighter future for my family and myself.

My favorite program at NRCF is the Saturday program. On Saturdays, I get to meet all my friends and we sit down to share the Saturday program meal as we tell stories of how our week has been. This is also the day when I get to dance with my fellow dance group members and now Saturday has become my favorite day of the week. I also love the Elimu Hub, which is a resource center. I especially love the Computer lab where I use the computers for learning and practicing basic computer skills like typing and I also write to my sponsor at the computer lab. I also like to visit the Library when I want to read a storybook or when I need to get learning materials.

I am grateful to the NRCF program for giving me the opportunity to join the program. I am now getting quality education without any interruption and my dreams are now looking more hopeful and achievable.

Learning through Play at the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation

financial litrature

This Saturday at the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation was full of fun, games, and learning. The program began with a tasty lunch, followed by an exciting game of kickball. The boys were divided into two teams, with one team kicking the ball and the other trying to catch it before their opponents could run around the small field. This activity encouraged fun, creativity, decision-making, and teamwork among both teams.

The girls displayed their impressive dance moves from their dance club lessons, bringing bright and shining smiles to everyone’s faces. Meanwhile, the art club proudly showcased their passion for creativity through breathtaking sketches that demonstrated each student’s artistic talents.

The financial literacy team engaged in a lively game of Monopoly – a classic board game that is not only enjoyable but also highly educational. Monopoly, derived from The Landlord’s Game created by Lizzie Magie in 1903, teaches economic theories and demonstrates that an economy rewarding individuals is better than one where monopolies hold all the wealth. Monopoly enhances cognitive development, promotes a positive attitude towards money, highlights the importance of goal-setting, fosters resilience, and instructs on risk/reward concepts as well as long and short-term investing strategies.

The football enthusiasts also had a thrilling match between two teams showcasing their skills and creative techniques on the field.

The day wrapped up with candy and snacks as the children mingled and enjoyed some free time together. Your generous contributions enable us to organize such impactful events which transform these young lives. You can continue to be part of our journey by volunteering, donating or sponsoring a child – ensuring our ability to touch even more lives in positive ways.

Godfrey, the Talented Barista and Mixologist

My name is Godfrey, and I’m proud to be an alumnus of the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation Foundation (NRCF). My journey in education and the professional world has been an exciting and transformative one, and I owe much of it to the support and opportunities I received during my time at NRCF.

I began my educational journey at NRCF in 2010 at Jagiet Academy, and it was here that I completed my primary education. In 2015, I embarked on a new chapter when I joined Parklands Boys High School. During my time at Parklands Boys, I wasn’t just a student; I was an active participant in various extracurricular activities. I played hockey and chess, and I also took on the role of a peer counselor, helping fellow students navigate the challenges of their academic journey and mental well-being.

After completing my high school education, I decided to pursue my passion for creating beverages and cocktails. I enrolled at Nairobi Bar School in 2019, where I had the opportunity to learn mixology skills. I earned a Certificate in Barista Skills, which was a three-month program, followed by a six-month Diploma in Professional Bartending and Mixology.

In April 2022, I took my first step into the world of professional mixology and bartending by joining Savoan Harvest in Karen. Initially starting as a bartender and mixologist, I quickly demonstrated my dedication and skills, earning a promotion to the role of Bar Manager within just four months. As a Bar Manager, my responsibilities included maintaining stock levels, preparing cashier reports at the close of business, and devising innovative promotional concepts to boost bar revenue. This experience allowed me to not only showcase my mixology skills but also develop strategic thinking in the field.

In January 2023, I moved to work as a Mixologist at INTI in Westlands, further expanding my experience and expertise in crafting unique and delightful cocktails. I worked here till August 2023. My journey as a mixologist has been a thrilling one, and I look forward to continuing to pursue my passion in this field.

As I seek new opportunities in my career, I am currently on the lookout for a position as a mixologist or barista. I’m excited about the prospect of utilizing my knowledge and skills to create innovative and exciting beverages for customers to enjoy. Additionally, I aspire to venture into entrepreneurship in the future, where I can establish my own establishment and share my love for mixing and crafting beverages with the world.

I am immensely grateful to NRCF for their sponsorship and support during my formative years. Their assistance played a vital role in making my dreams come true and setting me on the path to a fulfilling career in mixology. I am excited about the future, and I will always cherish the memories and experiences that have shaped me into who I am today.
