Elimu Hub Computer Lab and Library
“Elimu” means “education” in Swahili, and Elimu Hub is the center of learning activities, resources, and community. Elimu Hub is on the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation campus, adjacent to the administrative building, and surrounded by a secure wall that embraces students with a sense of protection and safety in an unstable and sometimes dangerous neighborhood. Elimu Hub houses our computer lab and library.
Office Move Broadened Possibilities
The organization’s growth prompted NRCF to move to a new location in June 2021. The move offered the opportunity to start with a clean slate. With a comprehensive planning process, the organization can create a student- and alumni-centered, community-minded, and technology-forward environment for today and the future.
More than a Building, a Hub
Elimu Hub is an 800-square-foot building (24’ x 20’ first floor and 16’ x 20-second floor) that will be home to:
- A new and expanded Library
- A more spacious Computer Lab
- An internet hotspot to serve common and meeting areas
- Office space for librarian and Computer Lab volunteers and staff
Modern Systems for Reliable Connectivity
Modern systems including solar power and its hotspot will provide reliable electric power and wifi connectivity. Rolling power outages and “brown-outs” are commonplace in Nairobi, and reliable services will not only be more productive but will signal to students that they are equipped with the tools and technology that will enable them to compete in the modern world ahead.
A Campus for Wepowerment
“Wepowerment” is a core value of the NRCF community. It is the sense that students in our program benefit not only by becoming empowered individuals but the experience and lives Wepowerment by being a member of the collective community. As a member of this community, individuals collaborate, support, and give back to others. Elimu Hub will operate on the NRCF “campus”, creating a physical place where students can support one another, where alumni can return to the network and mentor younger students, and where Wepowerment can happen.
The grounds are surrounded by a secure wall that embraces students with a sense of protection and safety in an unstable and sometimes dangerous neighborhood. Elimu Hub sits adjacent to the 1,375-square-foot Administrative Building that NRCF moved into in June 2021. Saturday Programme playfields (where NRCF serves dozens of children each week with physical programming and a hearty lunch) are located next to the campus grounds. Elimu Hub makes it easy for students, their families, and case managers to have convenient access to each other in a more modern and fully welcoming place.
‘Thinking Outside the Box’ Design
The literal idea of stacking boxes of shipping containers to create Elimu Hub is a result of FONR/NRCF planners’ thinking outside the box. Utilizing custom-designed (and recycled!) shipping containers allows us to build with a relatively short turnaround from design to completion. After construction funds are secured, Elimu Hub is planned to be up and running by October 2021. Learn more about the project’s design.
