Empowering Post-Secondary Graduates through Computer training

Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) remains dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children through holistic and impactful programs. Among our many successful initiatives is the post-secondary computer training program. This program specifically targets high school graduates who are currently awaiting their transition to colleges and universities. We designed this program to equip students with essential computer literacy, digital skills, and technical expertise required for academic, professional, and entrepreneurial success.

As we progress through 2025, this year’s post-secondary computer training is already underway within our dedicated computer laboratory. We have partnered with Diakonia Training Institute, a respected institution that provides high-quality technical and vocational training to young people in Kenya. This collaboration ensures that the students benefit from a well-structured and industry-relevant learning experience.

The curriculum covers various topics. Students begin by mastering the fundamentals of document processing, then advance to the critical area of database management.

The goals of this carefully crafted curriculum extend beyond simply teaching software applications. They are driven by key objectives aimed at empowering our students to thrive in today’s data-driven world:

  • Provide students with practical knowledge and hands-on skills in key computer applications.
  • Enable learners to apply technology-driven solutions to real-world problems.
  • Prepare students for the digital job market by teaching in-demand computer skills.
  • Foster critical thinking, creativity, and efficiency in ICT-related fields.
  • Equip students with digital skills that will ease their transition into post-secondary education by enhancing their ability to conduct online research, create presentations, complete projects, and collaborate effectively.

Through this comprehensive program, NRCF is laying a strong foundation for our students’ future success. By equipping them with essential computer literacy and in-demand digital skills, we are empowering them to become confident and capable. We are transforming their lives and equipping them to bring positive change within their communities.

Meet Edmond, an aspiring lawyer

Achievement story

My name is Edmond, and I joined the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation in 2014. Before joining the program, life was challenging for my brother and me. We were under the care of our aunt, who had her own child, which made it difficult for her to meet our basic needs. She struggled to afford food, shelter, and school fees for all three of us. Fortunately, my aunt learned about NRCF and the impact it has on providing education to underprivileged children. Desiring a better life for me, she sought their support. She applied, and after the interview process, I was accepted into the sponsorship program.

I completed my primary education at Nelson Mandela Primary School, where I built a solid foundational knowledge. I then transitioned to Agoro Sare High School for my secondary education, a time of further learning and personal development. During this period, I actively participated in transformative programs offered by NRCF, including life skills training and mental health awareness.

I worked hard academically and achieved a B grade in my secondary school examinations, graduating from high school in 2024. This achievement is particularly meaningful to me as it symbolizes a victory over the challenges my brother and I encountered in our early years. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have always enjoyed playing football and the mental challenge of solving puzzles.  These hobbies provide a welcome balance to my studies.

Looking toward the future, I have a strong aspiration to pursue a degree in Law at the University of Nairobi. The dedication and exemplary leadership of the current president of the Law Society of Kenya, Faith Odhiambo, serve as a powerful inspiration for me. Therefore, I hope to contribute to the justice system and make a positive impact on society through law.

The support I have received from NRCF has been invaluable throughout my journey. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities they have provided. I want to thank the organization and my sponsor for investing in me. They have not only supported my education but also nurtured my interests and aspirations. I am excited about the future and determined to make the most of the foundation that has been laid for me.

Books for Africa and Ngong Road Children’s Foundation Deliver a Law Library to FIDA Kenya

In a remarkable collaboration aimed at bolstering legal resources in Kenya, Books for Africa and Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) have joined forces to deliver a comprehensive law library to the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kenya. This initiative marks a significant milestone in enhancing access to legal knowledge and resources, particularly for organizations dedicated to promoting justice and equality.

Books for Africa: A Legacy of Impact

Books for Africa, recognized as the largest provider of donated books to the African continent, has been instrumental in transforming educational and professional landscapes across Africa since 1988. With a mission to end the book famine in Africa, they have shipped over 60 million books to all 55 African countries. Notably, their law book program, launched in partnership with Thomson Reuters and the American Bar Association, has been pivotal in equipping legal professionals with essential reference materials.

Ngong Road Children’s Foundation: Nurturing Futures, Driving Change

Ngong Road Children’s Foundation, committed to supporting vulnerable children through education and holistic development, has played a crucial role in fostering future leaders. Under the leadership of Elizabeth Nyanchera, a distinguished lawyer and alumna of NRCF, the foundation has expanded its impact beyond traditional education support to initiatives that empower communities and organizations across Kenya.

A Visionary Partnership

The collaboration between Books for Africa and NRCF to deliver a law library to FIDA Kenya exemplifies visionary leadership and strategic philanthropy. Spearheaded by Mr. Lane Ayres, Director of The Jack Mason Law & Democracy Initiative at Books for Africa, this partnership ensures that FIDA Kenya receives a comprehensive collection of law resources. These resources are essential for FIDA Kenya’s efforts in advocating for women’s rights, providing legal aid, and advancing gender equality in Kenya’s legal landscape.

Impact and Future Prospects

The impact of this initiative extends far beyond the provision of books. It symbolizes a commitment to empowering organizations like FIDA Kenya with the knowledge and tools needed to effect systemic change. As FIDA Kenya integrates these resources into their advocacy and legal services, they are poised to strengthen their capacity to serve marginalized communities and drive legislative reforms.

NRCF Hosts a Talent Show and Empowerment Workshops

On 26th April, Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) hosted a vibrant and inspiring Talent Show at City Prime. The event brought together young performers from NRCF, Mathare Hope Achievers, and Mukuru Acrobatics. It celebrated creativity, resilience, and the incredible talents nurtured within our communities.

The Talent Show showcased a variety of performances, including dancing, acrobatics, traditional dance, taekwondo, and modeling. The audience was inspired by the children’s energy and passion. Beyond the performances, the day was also an opportunity to focus on important issues affecting young people today.

We were honored to partner with LadyAskari, a female-oriented security company, to deliver a powerful mentorship session on gender-based violence and child safety. Their team shared valuable lessons and practical strategies to help our children, especially girls, understand their rights and how to protect themselves.

Additionally,  we partnered with the Give Her Confidence Organization to conduct a menstrual health training session for over 70 girls. This vital session helped demystify menstrual health and equipped the girls with the knowledge to manage their hygiene confidently. After the training, the girls received sanitary pads, part of which were generously donated by Kimfay.

The day was a beautiful blend of talent, learning, and empowerment, reflecting our commitment to nurturing well-rounded, confident, and safe young people.

A big thank you to all our partners, supporters, and the incredible children who made the day unforgettable!

A Holiday Well Spent: Engaging Activities for NRCF Students

During this April school holiday, our students participated in a calendar full of engaging events. Holidays are meant for rest and spending time with family and friends. However, without structure or guidance, many students may engage in unsafe activities during their leisure time, such as drug and substance abuse. Some may even become victims of exploitation, including child abuse or sexual abuse.

A structured holiday program for growth and safety

This is why at NRCF, we are committed to providing our students with structure and guidance. This support helps them make the most of their leisure time through constructive activities. This April holiday, our programs have engaged both our primary and secondary school students. We implemented several initiatives focused on their well-being and development, including:

  • Library and study group sessions: Students spent their time on African Literature, fostering cultural understanding and appreciation. Meanwhile, our dynamic study group sessions saw students actively engaging in revision, strengthening their grasp of school subjects through peer learning.
  • Coding bootcamp: The coding bootcamp at the Elimu hub focused on essential STEM education to support Kenya’s growing tech sector. We aim to empower students to be future innovators. Key areas included website development, coding foundations, problem-solving, and practical project-based learning. Each student completed a project, such as a portfolio website, personal blog, interactive quiz app, or online resume, to showcase their skills.
  • Mental Health & Drug Substance Abuse: During these sessions, students are equipped with essential skills to navigate adolescence. The sessions help students recognize emotions, develop coping strategies, and build self-esteem. Additionally, they learn about the risks of drug abuse. By fostering open conversations and providing support, NRCF creates a safe environment for students to prioritize mental well-being and make healthy choices for a brighter future.
  • Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH): In this holistic health program, our students got to understand the anatomy and physiology of their bodies. This empowers them to remain free from unintended pregnancies, abortion, and sexually transmitted diseases.

This April holiday highlighted how much NRCF cares about helping students grow in various ways. By combining learning, tech skills, and essential life lessons in a safe and supportive environment, we ensured that the holiday was both beneficial and secure for students. Our aim is holistic development, equipping students with educational, technological, and vital life skills for a brighter future. Join us in transforming lives!
