Top High School Graduates Head to University

Clare and Michael are two exceptional students from this year’s graduating class. Clare joined Ngong Road Children’s Foundation in 2014, while Michael joined in 2012. Both have excelled in their exams and have secured spots at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology [JKUAT], one of Kenya’s prestigious universities. Clare is a dedicated student with a passion for research and was the top female student in the program. She enjoys spending time with friends who share her interests. Inspired by Refa, a  professional in Human Resource Management, she plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the same field to create a conducive work environment and help individuals reach their full potential. Apart from academics, Clare finds comfort in swimming and traveling, and she would like to one day travel to Paris.

On the other hand, Michael was the top male student. He loves watching documentaries and programming during his free time. A natural leader, he was the school captain and always at the top of his class. His role model is Simon, the managing director at DirectEd, who helps young people through coding. Michael was among the chosen few who proceeded to DirectEd’s main coding boot camp, and he says this would be a great boost in the course he will take, which is a degree in Computer Science. Michael also enjoys dancing, which brings him joy and relaxation.

Both Clare and Michael embody the spirit of well-rounded individuals. Their dedication to academics, along with their diverse interests and extracurricular activities, paints a bright picture for their futures. As they embark on their university journeys, their stories serve as an inspiration for others to pursue both academic excellence and their passions. Remember, success isn’t just about grades, but about finding your purpose and using your talents to make a difference.

Jackline’s Transformational Journey

Jackline joined the program on March 17, 2006. She attended Lepic School for her primary education and completed the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). She then attended Kaewa Secondary School, where she earned her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Following high school, she pursued her passion for front office and management at the Nairobi School of Aviation.

After graduating, Jackline worked as a receptionist for Ngong Road Children’s Foundation and Karibu Loo Limited. She later joined Bimeda Animal Health Limited, where she currently works in customer service.

Jackline is very grateful to the program and her sponsor, Keith Kale. He has had a profound impact on her life, enabling her to support herself, her mother, and her siblings. Reflecting on her life in the slums, she acknowledges that she wouldn’t have been able to attend school without the program. She is extremely proud of her sponsor, who supported her throughout her academic journey. This support has left a lasting mark on her heart, a story she will share with her children and grandchildren.

As she grew, Jackline transformed from an introvert into a social, outgoing, and responsible young woman. She enjoys her work and is deeply thankful to the Ngongroad Children’s Foundation and Keith Kale for making a significant difference in her life.

Latifah’s Achievement Story

By Sallyanne Atieno

I am Latifah. I was attending one of their focused primary schools before joining the program. I served as the head girl of my primary school, a position I held until my final year in primary school. I was a disciplined student as well as hardworking, which made me a good fit for the position. I really loved being a head girl, as I got the opportunity to exercise good leadership skills towards other students and lead by example.

After sitting for my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), I scored an above-average performance. This earned me a slot at a girls boarding school in Kitale. I was excited to join high school, especially because it was a new environment for me since I had not studied outside of Nairobi County. While in high school, I also held two leadership positions: dining hall captain and entertainment captain. I am really good at dancing, so it was easy for me to get the entertainment captain’s position. Apart from the leadership positions, I was also involved in a co-curricular activity. I was part of the drama club and part of the team that represented my school at different competition levels.

I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and performed above average. This made me the top-performing female student for the high school in in the program. I aspire to join the University of Nairobi and take a bachelor’s degree course in Law. I have always had an interest in law studies, since I was in primary school. I would also like to venture into the arts and graphic design when I am done with my course.

I would like to thank my sponsor, Chris, for sponsoring me and giving me the chance to pursue my education, and NRCF for making sure that I maximize the opportunity. I hope to succeed in my university studies, get a job, and transform my life and that of my family.

Sally’s Achievement Story

My name is Sally, and I joined the program when I was in grade 1. Joining Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) meant transferring to a better place. The thought of going to a better school and having my school fees and other school needs fully catered for was so exciting. Once I joined the program, I was admitted to one of their focus schools, and my transformational journey began.

After completing my primary education, I joined a girls secondary school in Limuru. I joined the Music Festival group, which involved music and drama performances from different schools and colleges. I was able to become the chairperson of the group when I was in form three. One of my favorite subjects was computer studies, and I naturally developed an interest in pursuing a course related to computer science.

In 2022, I joined Kabete National Polytechnic to pursue a course in Information Communication Technology (ICT). I knew that after 3 years of study, I wanted to be a computer programmer. In June 2022, I came to know of the TechMates program offered by NRCF while I was home for my school holiday, and I knew that it would be a great opportunity for me to learn new skills while also implementing them. I then decided to join the program as a developer intern. I interned for 2 months, after which I had to go back to school.

I was due to go for attachment in January this year and I chose to be attached under the TechMates program. For three months now, I have been working on the optimization of the NRCF website as well as updating the website’s media. I have also been taking courses offered under the program, and I have gained skills in coding.

As part of my work, I also assist the computer lab teacher at NRCF to facilitate computer classes for the primary students. My attachment is coming to an end this month, and I am really excited to go back to school having gained new skills and working in a professional environment.

After my attachment ends this month, I will be interning as a developer for 2 months before I go back to school in June. Once I complete my studies next year, I hope to get an opportunity to work for NRCF and also acquire new clients as a freelancer. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my educational dreams, and I hope to graduate and inspire more girls to take on technical courses like I did.

Top KCSE Candidate 2022

My name is Boaz. My father heard of Ngong Road Children’s Foundation from his friends in the neighborhood. He applied, and I got accepted to the program. I attended one of the program’s focus schools before transferring to General Service Unit (GSU) Primary School. I was determined to achieve the best in my academics and to also hold leadership positions. Due to my good performance and discipline, I was elected a class representative and also a house captain for my dormitory. Additionally, I was also a subject representative for mathematics and Kiswahili in my class, and these two were my favorite subjects.

When I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), I performed above average, which enabled me to secure a spot at a boys High School, a national high school in Kisii County. While in high school, I still held various leadership positions. I was a spiritual leader for Seventh-day Adventists in my school, and I was also a secretary for the school’s debate club. I was working really hard while in school, as I have always been a believer that education is key to opening doors to opportunities and creating paths for higher learning. I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and scored a good grade.

I am the top NRCF high school candidate for the class of 2022! I aspire to join the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and pursue a course in Computer Science. I have developed an interest in coding and computer technology, hence my choice of course. One of my goals after joining the university is to be able to join the TechMates program and enhance my coding skills under the developer’s program.

I am grateful to my sponsor, Cathy, for taking me through my educational journey and to NRCF for the sponsorship opportunity. I have benefited from pieces of training such as computer training and life skills training offered by the organization, and I attribute my success to all of that.
