Elimu ‘Education’ Hub: Empowering Kids Through Literacy

Located within a repurposed, bright yellow shipping container, the Elimu ‘Education’ Hub stands as a beacon of opportunity. It is not just a building; it is the heart of the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) library, where the community’s commitment to education comes to life. At the heart of this mission is Lucy, the Administrative Assistant and Librarian. She fosters a safe, resource-filled environment, ensuring every child has the high-quality tools they need to succeed.

The Pillar of Literacy: Beyond the Bookshelves

At its core, the Elimu Hub is designed to tackle literacy challenges head-on. The library isn’t just about storing books; it’s about active engagement.

  • Curated Selection: The shelves are stocked with a diverse range of titles, from picture books for early learners to complex narratives for older students.
  • Visual Aids: Recognizing that children learn in different ways, the library utilizes visual aids to help students grasp difficult concepts and improve comprehension.
  • Fluency and Confidence: By reading aloud and participating in group discussions, students bridge the gap between recognizing words and understanding their context, building the confidence needed to excel in their formal schooling.

Innovative Learning: The Power of Multimedia

One of the hub’s most popular features is its integration of technology through movie sessions. These aren’t just for entertainment—they are a strategic pedagogical tool:

  1. Educational Movies: Carefully selected films provide a window into the world, teaching history, science, and social studies in an easy-to-digest way.
  2. Life Skills Integration: Many sessions focus on character building, empathy, and problem-solving, helping students navigate the complexities of life outside the classroom.
  3. A Fun Environment: By making the library a place of “fun” and “discovery,” the NRCF ensures that students want to be there, fostering a lifelong love of learning.

Built on Generosity: The Impact of Sponsorship

The existence of the Elimu Hub is a testament to the power of global and local partnership. From the “Friends of Ngong Road” to various Rotary Clubs and individual donors, the facility represents a collective investment in the future of these children.

“Every book read, and every movie watched is a step toward a brighter, more independent future for our students.” — The NRCF Mission

How You Can Support the Vision

The Ngong Road Children’s Foundation relies on the continuous support of donors to maintain the facility, update the book collection, and provide the technology needed for their multimedia sessions.

The Elimu Hub proves that with the right resources and a dedicated team, every child has the potential to become a fluent reader and a confident leader.

Pacifikah: A Student Leader and Rugby Hero

At Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF), we are very proud of our students. Today, we celebrate Pacifikah, a young woman who shows us what hard work and leadership look like.

Pacifikah is currently in her 3rd year at Eldoret National Polytechnic. She is studying a Diploma in Counseling and Psychology Level 6. She is not just a student; she is a leader who makes a difference every day.

A Strong Voice for Students

In school, Pacifikah is the Class Representative. This means her classmates chose her to lead them. She is very vocal and is never afraid to speak up for others.

Because she is studying psychology, she is very good at:

  • Helping others: She listens to her friends when they have problems.
  • Leading: She helps her class stay organized and talk to their teachers.
  • Being Brave: She uses her voice to make sure every student is treated fairly.

A Champion on the Rugby Field

When she is not in the classroom, Pacifikah is on the sports field. She plays rugby for the school team.

Rugby is a tough and fast sport. It requires a lot of energy and teamwork. By playing rugby, Pacifikah has learned how to be strong, disciplined, and a team player. She brings that same “never give up” spirit to her studies and her life at NRCF.

Our Pride at NRCF

Pacifikah’s story is a great example for all the children at Ngong Road Children’s Foundation. She shows that with support and hard work, you can become:

  1. A great student in a professional field.
  2. A brave leader who helps others.
  3. A strong athlete who stays healthy and active.

We are so happy to support Pacifikah as she finishes her final year. She is a true role model!

Lucy’s Journey From Financial Hardship to Professional Success

For many young people, the path to a career is paved with steady support and clear skies. But for Lucy, the journey began in the shadows of uncertainty. Before finding her way to the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF), the necessities of life, things many take for granted, were her biggest barriers.

The Weight of Uncertainty

Before joining the program, life was a daily struggle for survival. The dream of an education felt like a luxury that was always just out of reach.

  • Financial Strain: School fees were a constant source of anxiety, often leading to missed classes and interrupted learning.
  • Basic Needs: Hunger was a frequent companion. Without stable access to meals, focusing on a textbook was nearly impossible.

“I remember the feeling of wanting to learn so badly, but the constant worry about whether we could afford the next term or even the next meal was overwhelming,” she recalls.

A Turning Point

Everything changed when she was accepted into the program. The heavy burden of school fees was lifted, replaced by the steady hand of a dedicated sponsor.

NRCF doesn’t just provide an education; they provide a lifeline. The program addressed her challenges holistically:

  1. Full Sponsorship: Covering tuition and school requirements.
  2. Nutritional Support: Ensuring that meals were no longer a question mark, but a guarantee.
  3. Mentorship: Providing the emotional and professional guidance needed to navigate the transition from student to professional.

Life Today

Fast forward to the present, and the transformation is complete. Lucy is now a professional Receptionist, serving as the face of her organization with confidence and grace.

The impact of her sponsorship extends far beyond her own office desk:

  • Self-Sustenance: She is now financially independent.
  • Supporting Family: She has moved from being supported to being a provider, helping sustain her family and uplift their quality of life.
  • Community Impact: Her success serves as a beacon of hope for other children currently in the NRCF program.

“I am so grateful to my sponsor and the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation. They didn’t just pay my fees; they gave me a future. Today, I can take care of myself and my family. My dream has truly come true.”

Why Sponsorship Matters

The story of this alumna is a testament to what happens when opportunity meets determination. NRCF continues to bridge the gap between poverty and potential, turning “what ifs” into “what is.”

Through the generosity of sponsors, children who once worried about their next meal are now the professionals leading Kenya into the future.

Highlighting Our Recent Sponsor Visit

Last week, Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) was honored to host one of our valued sponsors, Stanley Trollip, for a meaningful and inspiring visit to our program.

Stan took time to meet our dedicated staff team and gain a deeper understanding of the holistic support we provide to children and youth from the Dagoretti community. His visit provided him with a firsthand look at how sponsorship extends beyond school fees to encompass mentorship, career guidance, psychosocial support, and job preparation.

Engaging with Our Career Programs

During his time with us, Stan attended our Career Mentorship session for post-secondary (PS) students as well as our Job Preparedness Programme for alumni. In both sessions, he actively engaged with students, speaking passionately about career growth, workplace expectations, and the practical skills needed to thrive in today’s job market.

His insights on professional development, resilience, and continuous learning resonated strongly with our students. It was a powerful reminder of how sponsor engagement adds tremendous value—not only financially, but also through personal mentorship and encouragement.

A Saturday to Remember

Stan also joined our vibrant Saturday Programme, where he interacted with students in a relaxed and joyful setting. One of the highlights was watching the inspiring film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind together. The story of determination and innovation sparked meaningful conversations and laughter among the students and staff. Moments like these reflect the heart of NRCF—building community, nurturing dreams, and creating safe spaces where children can learn and grow.

A Special Moment with Shadrack

The most memorable part of Stan’s visit was meeting his sponsored student, Shadrack, who is currently in Form 3. The two shared a wonderful time bonding, catching up, and discussing Shadrack’s academic progress and aspirations for the future. Seeing the connection between sponsor and student come alive in person is always deeply moving. These relationships are at the core of our sponsorship model, reinforcing to our students that someone believes in them and is walking the journey alongside them.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day from our students at Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF). They have a unique perspective on Valentine’s Day. While many see a “big red heart,” our children see something much more practical.

Love is…

  • Books to read and a chance to learn.
  • A safe place to play with friends.
  • People like you who support them every single day.

Through their hand-drawn cards and bright smiles, our students reminded us that love is a verb. It is the action of showing up, providing an education, and building a future together.

Thank You for Your Support

Your generosity is what makes moments like these possible. Because of you, our students don’t just talk about love—they experience it through the resources and community you provide.

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at NRCF. We love you!
